WASHINGTON — The North Central Texas Community Health Care Center will receive a $308,475 grant to serve patients who lose their health care insurance in the troubled economy.

The funds come from the U.S. Health and Human Services Department through the Increased Demand for Services Community Health Center Grants, according to the White House.

In Texas, $20 million is being distributed to 65 health care centers serving people with little or no insurance, the announcement said. The centers will use the money to create or retain about 461 health care jobs during the next two years.

The grants are expected to provide health care to 149,445 more patients in Texas in that time. The clinics can use the awards to add new health care providers, expand hours, increase services and for other purposes.

Earlier this year, the Department of Housing and Urban Development awarded the center a $575,835 grant for a new clinic to serve the public housing community in Wichita Falls.

The center is funded through federal and state programs as well as patient fees. Patients pay according to a sliding scale.
