Many of the teams participating in Oktibbeha County’s Relay for Life benefitting the American Cancer Society are conducting a variety of fund-raisers beginning this week.
Relay For Life is a fun-filled overnight event designed to celebrate cancer survivorship and raise money to support American Cancer Society research, education, advocacy and patient assistance programs. The 2007 Relay raised $61,517.13 for to support the Cancer Society. The 2008 Relay had a fund-raising goal of $65,000, but raised $75,561.45. Because of the success of last year’s event, organizers have set a $70,000 fund-raising goal for the 2009 Relay.
Funds for the Relay are raised by the participating teams. Here are some of the fund-raisers being conducted by some of the Relay for Life teams:
Emerson Family School
• A spaghetti supper and silent auction are being held from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Emerson. The spaghetti dinner includes salad and bread. The cost is $5 per plate. A chair from Flexsteel will be raffled during the spaghetti supper.
• At Emerson, members of the public may donate $1 and get a Sun cutout displayed with their names or placed in memory or in honor of someone.
• The Emerson team is also selling the “Treasures in the Attic” photo packages and will be selling T-shirts.
Garan
Manufacturing
• The Garan team is conducting a raffle for BOSE Wave Radio. Tickets cost $2 apiece or three tickets may be purchased for $5.
• The Garan team is raffling off a two-night stay at any Hilton family hotel. The hotel stay will require a month’s notice for the donor to have time to set up the reservation.
Tickets cost $2 apiece or three tickets may be purchased for $5. The drawing will be held April 9 at 11 a.m.
• The Garan team will host a car wash from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday in the Garan parking lot. In case of rain, the car wash will be held April 25.
• The Garan team is conducting a “money hat” raffle, with the winner receiving $100 in cash. Tickets cost $2 apiece or three tickets may be purchased for $5. The drawing is scheduled April 9.
• The Garan team is conducting a raffle for an iPod. Tickets cost $2 apiece or three tickets may be purchased for $5.
• The Garan team will hold a “Memories and a Cure” fund-raiser in memory of Rob Stuckey at 9 p.m. April 24 in the Camphouse Room at Remington’s Hunt Club.
Three bands — Trademark, Under the Gun and Blackberry Wednesday — are scheduled to perform.
Tickets are $10 at the door and are available online at http://www.remingtonshuntclub.com, with all ticket proceeds going to the Relay.
Meadowview Baptist Church
• The Meadowview team is selling T-shirts for $15 apiece. The shirts are being sold by pre-order, though some will be sold the night of the Relay. Premier Imaging
• The Premier team is planning to raffle an iPod Touch within the next several days. An announcement about ticket sales is forthcoming. For more information, contact Jean-Marie Carroll at (662) 315-4464.
Starkville Daily News
• Torches of Hopes and luminaries may be ordered at the front desk of the Starkville Daily News offices at 304 E. Lampkin St., which are open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday. Torches may be ordered for $100 each; luminaries may be ordered for $10 apiece.
• Members of the public can stop by the SDN offices and donate $1 or $5 and get a Sun or Moon and Stars cutout displayed with their names or placed in memory or in honor of someone.
Statewide Federal Credit Union
• Every Friday throughout the day, members of the public can grab a bag of popcorn by coming in the lobby of the Credit Union and donating $1 to the American Cancer Society.
Also, members of the public can go inside and donate $1 or $5 and get a Sun or Moon and Stars cutout displayed with their names or placed in memory or in honor of someone.
• The Credit Union team is selling tickets for Boston Butts. Members of the public can pick up a ticket for your order during their business hours. Boston Butts are to be picked up April 11 between 9 a.m. and noon at the Credit Union.
• On April 10 (Good Friday), the Credit Union team is having a bake sale. Anyone who wants something sweet or baked can stop in between 8:15 a.m.to 4:45 p.m.
• The Credit Union will be soon be having a raffle for a leather recliner, car wash gift certificate, haircut gift certificates, a 1-hour massage, a computer desk, etc. More information will be announced on the raffles as soon as possible.
Synergetics DCS
• The Synergetics team will be conducting a garage sale from 6 to 11 a.m. April 4 as a Relay fund-raiser. The sale will be held at the Synergetics offices in Suite 100 in the 501 Business Centre at 501 Highway 12 West.
Team Holloway
• Team Holloway is selling raffle tickets for three hammock chairs for $1 apiece or 12 tickets for $10. Tickets are available at the Book Mart on Main Street, Allure Salon, Occasions and ProGraphics and from team members. The drawing will be held during the Relay on May 8
• Team Holloway is also selling T-shirts.
• Allure Salon is also raffling free pedicures and haircuts for Team Holloway. Chances may be purchased at Allure Salon.
Luminaries and Torches of Hope
Fund-raising is also conducted through the sales of luminaries and Torches of Hope. Those purchasing luminaries or Torches of hope buy them in memory of someone who died from cancer or in honor of someone who is a cancer survivor or current cancer patient.
During the Relay event, the luminaries and Torches of hope are placed along the track where participants walk throughout the night and are lit in a special service.
Sold for $10 apiece, Relay for Life organizers said more than 500 luminaries were purchased at the 2008 Relay in honor of a cancer survivors or in memory of those who lost the battle with cancer. The luminary sales goal for the 2008 Relay is 1,000.
The Torches of Hope are sold for $100 apiece and will be decorated with a small placard bearing the name of the person for whom the torch has been purchased.
Copies of both the Torch of Hope and luminary order forms are available at the front desk of the Starkville Daily News offices at 304 E. Lampkin St., which are open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday.
Orders for the torches and luminaries may be placed at the Starkville Daily News offices or mailed to Joyce Van Etten, Relay for Life accounting chair, c/o Atmos Energy, 402 University Drive, Starkville, MS 39759.
