Nanotechnology increases global mesothelioma concern

New advances in nanotechnology have prompted global anxiety regarding to associated health risks to the technology.

Dallas, Texas (CaymanMama.com) –As clinical trials and medical research continue to shed more light on the fatal results of asbestos and mesothelioma cancer, new advances in nanotechnology have prompted global anxiety regarding to associated health risks to the technology.

In a recent news report, the Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) has requested additional regulations be imposed for the safety of workers who handle nanomaterials. Much of the alarm has been brought about by the similarities between nanoparticles and asbestos fibers, which is associated with mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases.

Regarding the steadily growing nanotechnology revenue, Occupational and Health Safety Officer Steve Mullins said, “What is happening is a market is growing in an unregulated space and that is dangerous for workers. From our point of view, there are growing concerns about the health and safety impacts of nanotechnology.”

Maxine McCall with Australia’s Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization know that policy makers have quite a challenge ahead of them.

“If we’re to have appropriate and sensible regulation, the policymakers have to be appropriately informed,” McCall said. “Right now, we don’t have sufficient information in my opinion to have sensible regulation so a lot of scientific research has to be done in this area.”
