Students head to the Dome to battle cancer

By: Web Staff

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The Carrier Dome is normally where Syracuse University students go to watch their sports teams do battle, but Saturday night, the Dome was where students went to battle cancer.

SU was hosting its 7th annual Relay for Life. The 12-hour event ran until 6 a.m. Teammates took turns walking the course inside the Carrier Dome to raise money for the American Cancer Society.

Organizers say the Relay for Life is so popular because it gives students a chance to play an active role in cancer research.

“Unfortunately cancer is something we've all been affected by and I think its really important for students to feel like they have a voice, they can fight back, and this is a really empowering thing to be a part of the fight against cancer,” said Betsy Barrett, American Cancer Society.

An estimated 2,500 students and faculty members took part in the event and raised over $100,000 for the American Cancer Society.
