As is becoming a yearly tradition, La Crescent Mayor Mike Poellinger proclaimed April as National Child Abuse Prevention Month. Mayors around the area set aside the month as a way to call attention to the goals of the Coulee Region Child Abuse Prevention Task Force, which formed in 1998 and works to raise awareness of the month in the La Crosse area.
On April 1, Poellinger, members of the task force and students gathered in the La Crescent-Hokah Elementary School gymnasium for the proclamation and a short ceremony. Poellinger told the students it is the city’s responsibility to put protection in place for them, and as adults in the community, it is their job to look out for the children.
“We’re here today to tell you how important you are, and we’re here to say the community is here to support you,” he said. “We look forward to having everything in place to make sure you’re going to grow into a successful adult.”
After the mayor’s remarks, he was joined by La Crescent-Hokah Elementary School Principal Ron Wilke and several students in tying blue ribbons to the trees in front of the school. The blue ribbon symbolizes the belief that children are our greatest resource and deserve gentle guidance and loving care.
