The 2009 Coke County Relay For Life was held last weekend at the Robert Lee High School football field and track in Robert Lee. The event is designed to celebrate survivors, remember those who have battled cancer and fight the disease.
The relay includes the towns of Bronte and Robert Lee. More than $35,000 was raised to help support the American Cancer Society's efforts in the areas of research, education and patient services.
A total of 159 people in 13 teams participated, and an estimated 90 survivors, joined by caregivers, walked the opening lap to start the relay. One of the American Cancer Society's Heroes of Hope, Sue Sorrells of San Angelo, spoke to the survivors during the opening ceremony.
Approximately 500 lighted bags lined the track and spelled out "HOPE" in the visitor stands for the luminaria ceremony. Local Girl Scout Troop No. 5193 helped set out the luminaria bags.
A canned food drive was held in connection with the luminaria ceremony, and cans, instead of sand, were used to secure bags. More than 500 canned goods were donated to the Coke County Food Pantry.
A Fight Back ceremony included ways to fight cancer: getting a cancer screening test such as a mammogram, Pap test, colonoscopy or PSA test; quitting smoking; eating right; getting more exercise; and using sunscreen.
Deejay Tommy Stubbs from Kickin' Country 103.1 was on hand to keep things lively throughout the night. On the second day, the Robert Lee Silver Lions Club served breakfast to about 90 participants who had stayed the entire night.
Relay For Life is "Celebrating 25 Years of Hope" in 2009. The Coke County theme this year was the '80s. The Super-Team Trophy, an overall award based on a point system for fundraising and participation, went to Team Rocky '09.
