IFC: Perchlorate in baby formula safe

BEIJING, April 7 (Xinhuanet) -- Perchlorate found in powdered baby formula in U.S. is "safe," said a spokesperson for the International Formula Council.

Haley Curtis Stevens, spokesperson for the council, said recently a study from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) provides no data on any adverse health effects that might develop from feeding the formula to a baby.

Last month, the CDC published the study on the test of 15 brands of formula.

Stevens said the study does not contain any information at all on the ill effects of consuming the baby formula, other than to say safe levels of the chemical might exceed the limit considered safe even for adults.

In its test, the CDC found perchlorate, which is also used as the main ingredient in solid rocket fuel, contaminating every single one. Perchlorate can interfere with the production of thyroid hormones by inhibiting the absorption of iodine.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is aware of the controversy but has issued no recommendations that anyone change diet or eating habits.

However, the levels of the chemical have been deemed safe by the Environmental Protection Agency.
