April is Child Abuse Prevention Month and is an opportunity for all citizens of Coweta County to become informed about the problem of abuse, and to learn about promising solutions.
Prevent Child Abuse Coweta (PCAC) announces two special services to be held this month. PCAC will have its annual Pinwheel Event Friday, April 10 at 10 a.m. in front of the Charles Wadsworth Auditorium at 25 Jefferson St. in Newnan. Each Spring, pinwheels are placed on the lawn of the building. The pinwheels represent the innocence and promise of all children. Newnan Mayor Keith Brady will present a proclamation at the brief ceremony.
On Thursday, April 16, at 7 p.m., PCAC will have a Candelight Vigil to remember abuse victims. The vigil will be held at the corner of Temple Avenue and Jackson Street in Newnan. Speakers from various disciplines will present information on children's issues.

Rain date for the vigil is April 23. Those attending may bring a blanket or chair.
Helen Passantino, president of PCAC, says the group invites all community members to attend the ceremony to renew the "commitment in helping the prevention of child abuse."
Passantino's suggestions on what individuals can do to help prevent child abuse include: reaching out to children with encouragement and smiles, watching out for children in your neighborhood, and giving time to organizations that help make families stronger.
PCA Georgia's helpline, 1-800-CHILDREN, provides support and access to community resources for parents.
For more information on participating in the effort locally, contact Passantino at 770-253-2461.
"It's not enough to recognize that child abuse exists," says DePriest Waddy, chief executive officer of PCA Georgia. "Preventing child abuse means understanding the conditions that make children vulnerable to harm and taking the action necessary to improve those conditions. Preventing child abuse is the work of everyone, every day."
