'Relay For Life' Set May 8-9

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Relay for Life event nationwide, and it is not too late to join the celebration by starting a Relay team. The American Cancer Society of Rockbridge County will hold a meeting of all local Relay for Life team captains on Thursday, April 16, 2009 at 6:30 p.m. at Faith Assembly of God church. All team captains are strongly encouraged to attend this meeting to turn in monies and receive important updates about this year’s local Relay which will be held May 8-9, 2009 at Rockbridge County High School. The monthly team captain meeting also provides an opportunity to interact with other Relay teams, receive education about cancer issues and legislation, brainstorm fund-raising ideas, and receive inspiration from local cancer survivors.

All Relay teams are offering candle luminaries for purchase by the public for $10.00. These may be purchased in honor of a cancer survivor or in memory of a person who has lost their fight with cancer. Additionally, cancer survivors can be honored and former patients remembered through the photo luminaria celebration. This is a Power Point presentation with a photo of the cancer survivor/patient that takes place during the Relay event. The donation price to the American Cancer Society for a photo luminary is $5.00. Photos should be submitted to a local team captain with the fee. Each photo should identify the person in the photo. For more information about luminaria or the PowerPoint presentation please call Curtis Caylor at 464-1234. Also if you have the name of a person who has died of cancer since last year’s Relay and would like them included in the Hill of Hope ceremony at the event (free of charge) please contact Laura Lewis at 460-0717.

To date over 40 teams have registered to participate in the Relay event which raises money for prevention programs, research, patient services and detection treatment, and include programs like Reach to Recovery, Road to Recovery, I Can Cope, Look Good Feel Good, Man to Man, and Tell A Friend.

The theme of this year’s Relay is "Hope, Cope, & Cure." If you are interested in having a relay team but cannot attend the April team captain meeting, it is not too late to form a team. You may register your team or receive more information about this year’s event, by viewing the local website at http://main.acsevents.org or contacting Relay Co-chairs, Curtis Caylor at 464-1234 or Jeff Mohler at 463-5463.
