A Massachusetts hospital is among the six facilities that may be permanently shuttered by Shriners Hospitals for Children, according to a report by the Associated Press.
Shriners will vote at the annual meeting in July on closing hospitals in Springfield, Mass., Shreveport, La., Erie, Pa., Spokane, Wash. and Greenville, S.C., said the report. The Springfield facility is a 40 bed pediatric orthopedic center. Shriners also operates a hospital in Boston, among its 22 total facilities.
The organization also will consider whether a hospital in Galveston, Texas will remain shuttered. That hospital was closed temporarily after damage from Hurricane Ike.
Shriners is considering the move because donations are stagnant, costs are increasing and the charity’s endowment is decreasing, the report said. A call to the Shriners’ headquarters in Florida for comment was pending return.
