WASHINGTON (AP) — On the eve of World Malaria Day, the head of UNICEF says there is enough money available to provide bed nets treated with long-lasting insecticide to everyone in Africa at risk of malaria by 2010.
Ann Veneman says she hopes that will eliminate the nearly 1 million deaths annually from the killer disease by 2015.
Veneman's announcement at a global summit on malaria on Friday was greeted by loud applause, as was the announcement that President Barack Obama is committed to making the United States a global leader in ending malaria deaths by 2015.
U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice said in the keynote speech that eliminating malaria deaths in six years "is a target we can hit."
